Originally this area belonged to St.Xavier’s Parish, Pallavaram. In the year 1964, Fr.MathewVettical who was parish priest at that time arranged a Lenten retreat inviting twoRedemptorist priests. The retreatens visited the catholic families in Rajaji Nagar area. Finding that there are enough families to say holy mass in the area, they performed holy mass for one week in a thatched shed situated in the place where the AruthalMatha grotto is now situated. At that time not only families from RajajiNagar but also a number of workers from the Gordon Woodroffe Leather Company attended the mass. Encouraged by the response, Fr.MathewVettical consulted with some important persons in this area for constructing a small sub-station church . Welcomed the idea many came forward to help. One Thiru.M.Raja Joseph came forward to donate the land belonged to him for the construction of a sub station church.
